If it hadn’t already, San Jose City FC proved it why it’s the top team in the 2017 LIGA NorCal South Division, shutting out second placed JASA out of Redwood City 4-0. The win marked the third straight for San Jose and second in a row at home.
It’s the team’s first clean sheet of the season after letting in a late goal in the home opener two weeks prior.
“They [the defense] played fantastic, said starting goalkeeper Charlie Furrer. We worked really hard to communicate, to get with the guys before and tried to figure out a game plan and I think they played pretty well.”
The opening 20 minutes was a feeling out stage for between the top two sides in the league, however San Jose looked more dangerous and it was just a matter of time before San Jose’s big center forward would strike.
With good ball movement, the ball found its way to an open Salifu Jatta inside the opponent’s 18 yard box. He took a touch a drove it to the bottom left corner of the net past the diving goalkeeper scoring the opening goal at the 28 minute mark.
Less than a minute later, San Jose got its second when JASA’s goalie ventured out of his net with the ball only to turn it over to a wide open Jatta inside the penalty box. He made no mistake, passing it into the wide open net tallying his fifth in four games and putting his team up by two.
San Jose City’s third goal was a well-deserved bit of redemption by midfielder Andres Jimenez.
He missed barely missed a shot earlier on in the first frame, but got a second opportunity and capitalized right before the halftime whistle.
“The one I missed I was kind of cheating a bit, Jimenez said. The second one, I had a left footed shot and I knew he [the goalkeeper] was going to block it so I cut it across and hit the back post and went in”
The second half played out much like the first.
JASA wasn’t able to get much going offensively, while San Jose stayed organized and maintained the majority of the possession which led to the team’s fourth and final goal of the game.
Midfielder Alenjando Alcaraz found an opening in between several JASA defenders in the box, received the ball, turned and fired a rocket into the bottom left corner of the net giving the goalie no chance.
Jimenez realized the significance of the win as San Jose City FC is now positioned firmly atop the league after the win.
“I’m looking forward to the playoffs and playing other teams,” Jimenez said. “It’s good to be in first place.”
A special thank to the PAC U8 girls helping out in the player introductions as they walked on the field with the starting eleven.
